Paris Saint-Germain swept aside Manchester City 4-2 at the Etihad Stadium, storming into a 3-0 half-time lead before resisting a second-half response led by Erling Haaland.

Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha struck during a devastating 19-minute first-half spell as the reigning European champions tore through City. Maghnes Akliouche later added PSG’s fourth to stop the hosts building real momentum.

Quick facts

  • PSG won 4-2 at Manchester City after leading 3-0 at the interval.
  • Doué scored once and created Dembélé’s goal during the first-half surge.
  • Haaland scored both City goals and became the club’s leading Champions League scorer.
  • Haaland also became the youngest player to reach 60 Champions League goals, surpassing Lionel Messi’s mark by one day.
  • Gianluigi Donnarumma saved a late Ferran Torres penalty.
  • PSG have now won 11 of 16 matches against Premier League clubs since the start of 2024-25.

Pep Guardiola was back at the Etihad for the first time since leaving City after a 10-year managerial reign in May. His return came at City’s first home match since the Premier League’s guilty verdict in the club’s case was published.

City started Abdukodir Khusanov at right-back, but Doué repeatedly found space and influence down that flank. The French forward opened the scoring with a disguised finish, shaping for the far corner before driving his effort inside the near post.

Two minutes later, Doué’s quick control and delivery under pressure created a straightforward back-post header for Dembélé. Vitinha then completed the first-half scoring as PSG exposed a City side unable to contain their movement or tempo.

Enzo Maresca made three substitutions at half-time and shifted Matheus Nunes to right-back. City improved sharply after the restart, with Haaland twice finding the net to cut the deficit.

His double carried major personal milestones, but Akliouche’s goal re-established PSG’s control. Torres had the chance to reduce the margin late on, only for Donnarumma to keep out his penalty.

European standard set by PSG

PSG arrived as back-to-back Champions League winners and again looked equipped to chase a third successive title. Luis Enrique’s side have no single dominant figure at the centre of their success, with Dembélé, Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia supported by Vitinha, Fabián Ruiz, Achraf Hakimi and Marquinhos.

Luis Enrique and Guardiola each have three Champions League titles and both have won a treble with Barcelona. A third consecutive PSG European crown would give Luis Enrique a fourth Champions League and a feat Guardiola has not managed.

For City, the result is a sharp measure of the gap to Europe’s current pace-setters. They have not reached the Champions League semi-finals since winning the competition in Istanbul in 2023, and were eliminated by Real Madrid in the round of 16 last season.

City have made a perfect Premier League start, including victories at Old Trafford and Anfield, but the PSG defeat underlined the work still required before the knockout rounds. Right-back remains an area opponents can target, particularly against elite wide attackers.

PSG’s latest win also extended their recent command over English opposition. Since the beginning of the 2024-25 campaign, their record against Premier League clubs stands at 11 wins, two draws and three defeats.

That run includes victories over Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Aston Villa and City, while Newcastle United drew with them in the league phase. Arsenal and Liverpool have beaten PSG in that period, and Aston Villa’s 2025 quarter-final second-leg win did not overturn the tie.

Next, PSG will look to turn another emphatic English away win into momentum for their title defence. City have time to recover, but their route back to the highest level in Europe will require a much tighter response than they produced before half-time at the Etihad.
