Resident Evil 2 Remake Overtakes Resident Evil 5 as Capcom’s Top Seller
Capcom has confirmed that Resident Evil 5 has been overtaken in lifetime sales by the Resident Evil 2 remake, ending the survival horror series’ 15-year run with a new top seller.

Fresh franchise figures show that Resident Evil 2 has moved 19.75 million copies, edging past Resident Evil 5’s final reported total of 19.01 million. The shift means Resident Evil 5 is no longer the highest-selling entry in Capcom’s main survival horror line after holding that position for roughly 15 years.

Remakes keep the franchise selling
Capcom’s numbers also underline how strongly the series’ back catalog continues to move years after launch. Resident Evil 2 debuted in 2019 and is still selling, and the publisher’s recent record of Leon S. Kennedy-focused releases has likely helped sustain demand.
Two other major releases are also performing well enough to potentially challenge the new leader over time:
- Resident Evil 4 remake: 16 million copies sold
- Resident Evil Requiem: 8 million copies sold (expected to climb with discounts and a post-launch expansion)
Franchise total, competitor context, and what’s next
Across the entire Resident Evil franchise, Capcom reports combined sales of 213 million copies. That total puts the series ahead of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy franchise, which is listed at 212 million total sales, though those Final Fantasy figures have not yet been updated for the current financial quarter.
Capcom also highlighted strong performance from other titles, including Pragmata at 2.51 million copies and Monster Hunter: World at 30.45 million copies.
Looking ahead for fans of the series, Capcom’s next big Resident Evil moment is the release of Zach Cregger’s movie on September 16, followed by Resident Evil Veronica in 2027.
