In an interview, Cregger described the film as “gnarly,” “brutal,” and “a very bloody affair.” He also framed the project as a straightforward monster-hunt story: one character’s journey on foot, fighting threats, with no interest in “checking boxes.” Cregger said the movie “steps on the gas” about eight minutes in and maintains that pace without letting up.
While Cregger’s filmography includes horror and thriller projects, he’s also previously built a reputation for extreme comedy sketches during his days with Whitest Kids ‘U Know. He referenced violent bits from that era, including a sketch titled “Sniper Business,” where his character witnesses an intern being shot through the eye, and another segment (“Gallon of PCP”) in which his character’s girlfriend has been beheaded by a drug dealer.
Cregger also addressed common expectations for a Resident Evil adaptation. He said he never set out to expand the franchise’s lore or provide a detailed breakdown of how the T-virus works. Instead, he emphasized that the goal was to tell a fun story—without treating the movie like a lore checklist.

The movie stars Austin Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier sent to a hospital in Raccoon City. Cregger said Abrams was nearly killed by a 150-pound “blood bag” during filming, and that the moment made it into the final cut.
