Roberto Fernández Shines on Full Spain Debut in Czechia Win
Roberto Fernández has marked his first senior Spain appearance with a full 90 minutes in La Roja’s win over Czechia, helping force Ladislav Krejci’s late dismissal despite being denied the debut goal he wanted.
Fernández gives Spain a new focal point
The Espanyol striker was selected to lead the attack and immediately delivered the kind of hard-running centre-forward display Spain needed. Fernández stretched the Czech defence, created room for team-mates and went close twice in a demanding contest at the Carlos Tartiere.
Krejci struggled to deal with the debutant’s movement and physical presence. The defender collected a second yellow card in the 85th minute after another difficult battle with Fernández.
Fernández did not get on the scoresheet, but he was pleased with the work that helped Spain’s other attackers find openings.
“It was my debut and I enjoyed it,” he said. “As a striker, I wanted to score, but I’m very happy. I have to keep working.”
He added: “I didn’t score, but I pulled the centre-backs away so others could score.”
Key moments from the debut
- Fernández received the starting role as Spain’s central striker for his first senior cap.
- He threatened the Czechia goal twice and repeatedly occupied the opposition centre-backs.
- His duel with Krejci ended with the defender sent off for a second booking in the 85th minute.
- Fernández completed the full match, finishing strongly after taking several heavy challenges.
Full-match fitness strengthens his case
The 90-minute outing came at a physical cost. Fernández admitted he took knocks from all over the pitch, but he saw the chance to finish the match as an important step in his international development.
“I took a lot of punishment, but I ended strongly,” he said. “Playing the whole game was great. Now it is onwards and upwards.”
The striker also arrived in the senior group with some familiarity. He had previously worked with Santi Denia in Spain’s Under-21 set-up and knew Denia was in the Czech Republic when the call came.
Espanyol milestone and the next challenge
Fernández is now the 49th Espanyol player to represent Spain’s senior national team while registered with the club. Joselu had been the previous Pericos player to feature for La Roja, doing so in 2023.
- Fernández made his senior Spain debut as the starting striker.
- He played all 90 minutes and contributed to Krejci’s 85th-minute red card.
- The Espanyol forward created space for Spain’s attack but did not score.
- His next task is to retain his place amid intense competition for Spain’s attacking positions.
The first cap has given Fernández a platform, but the race for a regular role in Spain’s forward line starts now.
