Andy Robertson marked his 100th Scotland appearance with a 2-0 Nations League win over North Macedonia in Skopje, becoming just the second man to reach the milestone for the national team.

Key takeaways

  • Robertson joins Kenny Dalglish, who won 102 caps, in Scotland’s 100-cap club.
  • Kieron Bowie opened the scoring after seven minutes with his first senior international goal.
  • John McGinn struck from the penalty spot in the 69th minute to secure the points.
  • Scotland finished with 10 men after Scott McKenna received a straight red card.
  • The result moves Scotland up to third in Nations League Group B1.

Robertson’s landmark night ends in victory

Scotland had waited for a first win in their 2026-27 UEFA Nations League campaign, and Robertson made sure his landmark evening at the Toshe Proeski Arena ended with three points.

The former Liverpool left-back was pushed high up the pitch in an aggressive role and repeatedly threatened in the early stages. He had four attempts in the first 13 minutes and joked afterwards that Dalglish may have been concerned about his scoring record.

“I thought Kenny Dalglish was going to be worried about his goalscoring record in the first few minutes,” Robertson said. “I had about six shots. They did a nice presentation for me; I told them I wanted the win. The lads did so well to get the win. It will be a special one for me and my family.”

Robertson said reaching a century of caps carried huge personal meaning after an international journey that began with his first Scotland appearance years earlier.

“It means everything to me, and it means everything to my family,” he said. “I’ve been away 100 times now, so I’ve got to feel sorry for my wife. It has been an unbelievable journey. I remember my first game, and it has been a process since then. It’s emotional for me. I love this country. There has only been one person before me in the men’s game to do that, so it is a very special achievement.”

Bowie and McGinn deliver crucial response

Scotland made the fast start count when Bowie bent a superb effort into the net in the seventh minute. It was the forward’s first goal at senior international level and gave the visitors early control.

The away side remained on top for long spells, although their closing task became harder when McKenna was sent off. Scotland nevertheless found the decisive second goal after a scramble in the box led to a penalty, with McGinn keeping his nerve to convert in the 69th minute.

The victory offers a timely lift after previous disappointments against Slovenia and Switzerland, while also suggesting the squad is adapting rapidly to the demands of the new coaching staff.

Scotland now return to Hampden Park to face Slovenia on 6 October. The fourth matchday will close the autumn international window before the final two Group B1 fixtures are played in November.
