Rooney Warns Carrick He Needs Immediate Results at Manchester United
Wayne Rooney has warned Michael Carrick that Manchester United cannot afford to wait for another transfer window, arguing that the manager needs results immediately after a difficult opening to the Premier League season.
Rooney: Carrick faces instant pressure
United have taken four points from their first three league matches and conceded six goals, putting fresh focus on a side Rooney believes remains short of the level required to challenge at the top.
The former United striker said the demands of the Old Trafford job leave little room for a long-term wait.
- Rooney said every Manchester United manager understands the intensity of the role.
- He urged Carrick to press as hard as possible for the players he needs rather than later regretting missed opportunities.
- Rooney believes the growing influence of American ownership has increased the expectation for quick success.
- His central warning was clear: Carrick cannot simply postpone fixing the defence until next year.
“When you manage Manchester United, you know the pressure that comes with it,” Rooney said. “You do not get much time.”
Defensive concerns after summer window
Rooney was particularly critical of United’s recruitment, with the club bringing in three midfielders and a reserve goalkeeper rather than the defensive additions Carrick had wanted.
Although Carrick has publicly expressed satisfaction with his new squad, Rooney suggested that response was inevitable from a manager protecting his position.
“Michael has said he is happy with the players who came in, but I do not think any manager is completely happy,” Rooney said. “He has to say the right things. But he does not have time to wait until next year and then say his defence will be sorted.”
United’s early concession tally has underlined Rooney’s concern that the back line has been left exposed.
Bruno needs more support
Rooney also questioned whether United have supplied captain Bruno Fernandes with enough quality around him. Fernandes set a Premier League assist record last season and remains the side’s key creative figure, but Rooney does not see enough in the current group to lift the club into a title race.
- Rooney described Fernandes as a brilliant player and said the midfielder is carrying a huge burden.
- He believes Fernandes will be desperate for stronger support from the club’s recruitment.
- Rooney said the new arrivals do not yet make United look like a team that should expect to win the Premier League.
“I love Bruno. He is brilliant,” Rooney said. “He must be thinking, ‘Bring me some help. I am doing everything I can.’ I do not think the club have done that with the signings.”
What happens next
Rooney accepts that United’s ambitions must be tempered by the current state of the squad. He pointed to Arsenal’s gradual improvement under Mikel Arteta over the past five years as an example of a rebuild taking time.
United still want to return to competing for the Champions League and the Premier League, but Rooney said they are not presently close to that standard despite the weight of the club’s history.
“Manchester United have won so many Premier Leagues and Champions Leagues, and supporters will always want that,” Rooney said. “But realistically, they are not there at the moment.”
