Rudi Voller Hints at Germany Recall for In-Form Niklas Fullkrug
Germany sporting director Rudi Voller has opened the door to a Niklas Fullkrug recall after the striker’s fast-scoring return to the Bundesliga.
Key takeaways
- Fullkrug has scored four times across his first five Bundesliga appearances after returning to Germany on loan from West Ham.
- The 33-year-old struck a stoppage-time leveller in Friday’s 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund.
- Voller said Fullkrug’s aerial ability and current output make him a possible option for the national squad.
- Germany face Serbia away on November 13, then welcome the Netherlands three days later in the Nations League.
- Fullkrug has 14 Germany goals but has not played for the side since September 2025.
Voller sees immediate option for Klopp
Voller believes Fullkrug’s form could put him firmly in Jurgen Klopp’s thinking as the incoming Germany coach weighs up his attacking choices for the next international window.
The veteran centre-forward delivered again against Dortmund, salvaging a point with a late finish after a tense Bundesliga contest. His four-goal start since coming back to German football has strengthened his case for a return.
“He can head the ball, that is clear,” Voller said. “When he scores goals like that, then why not?”
Fullkrug’s last Germany involvement came in September 2025, when he remained an unused substitute during the 2-0 loss to Slovakia in Julian Nagelsmann’s final period in charge.
Euro 2028 remains a longer-term concern
Voller stressed that Fullkrug’s age means he is unlikely to be viewed as a lasting answer through to Euro 2028. But he insisted the striker has already shown he can be called upon when Germany need a physical, direct attacking presence.
“We are talking about the European Championship in two years, and he will be older,” Voller said. “But if it keeps going this way, he has shown that you can always bring him in. Strong Bundesliga performances help.”
Germany are third in their Nations League group ahead of the November fixtures. The trip to Serbia on November 13 is followed by the Netherlands match at home three days later, giving Klopp an early decision over whether Fullkrug’s club form merits an immediate international return.
