Scaloni Pushes to Keep Walter Samuel on Argentina Coaching Staff
Lionel Scaloni is working to keep assistant coach Walter Samuel in Argentina’s set-up beyond December, despite Samuel considering a move into European management when his current deal ends.

Samuel has become a central figure in the world champions’ staff, and Scaloni sees retaining him as an important part of Argentina’s transition following Lionel Messi’s retirement.
Speaking before Tuesday’s match against Benin, Scaloni made clear that his personal relationship with the former defender comes before any attempt to influence his decision.
“He is hugely important, but he is also my friend,” Scaloni said. “I want what is best for him. If he chooses to take a decision, he has every right to do that.”
Argentina’s coach nevertheless admitted Samuel’s departure would create a major gap. “The door is open and there would be no problem if that is what he wants,” he added. “But it would be a huge loss, and we will have to see what happens if he is not with us in the future.”
The former Boca Juniors player has been on the Argentina backroom team throughout the most successful spell of Scaloni’s reign. The pair helped guide La Albiceleste to Copa América victories in 2021 and 2024, the 2022 Finalissima and the World Cup in Qatar. Their record also includes third place at the 2019 Copa América and a runners-up finish at the 2026 World Cup.
Scaloni is close to becoming the first Argentina manager to take charge across three World Cup cycles. His focus is now shifting towards building the group for 2030, with continuity among his coaching staff viewed as a key part of that process.
What happens next will depend on Samuel’s decision before his contract expires. Argentina, meanwhile, must begin a new competitive phase without Messi while trying to preserve the standards established during their run of international success.
