Spain Close to Keeping Luis de la Fuente Until 2030 World Cup

Spain are closing in on a contract extension for Luis de la Fuente that would keep the 65-year-old in charge through the 2030 World Cup. Negotiations between the Royal Spanish Football Federation and his representative, Alvaro Torres, have been running for two months and are approaching completion.

De la Fuente’s existing deal had been due to run until the end of Euro 2028, but Spain’s World Cup success has accelerated plans to secure his future for another tournament cycle. The federation want continuity as preparations build towards the 2030 finals, which Spain will stage alongside Portugal and Morocco.

The coach has delivered an extraordinary run since taking over the senior side in December 2022. Spain won the UEFA Nations League in 2023, lifted Euro 2024 after beating England in the final, then added the World Cup title this summer.

That World Cup was sealed with an extra-time victory over Argentina at MetLife Stadium, following the tournament across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Spain’s triumph meant the country simultaneously held the men’s and women’s World Cups, while also remaining European champions.

Stability the priority

De la Fuente’s expected new agreement is set to include continuity for his main backroom team through 2030. It would offer Spain a more settled structure after assistant Pablo Amo left following Euro 2024.

His standing inside the federation has also strengthened his case. Before reaching the senior job, De la Fuente spent nine years working with Spain’s youth sides and enjoyed Olympic success, giving him a long-established connection to the national-team set-up.

What happens next: Spain return to action on September 26, when they meet England in the UEFA Nations League group stage. De la Fuente’s side will aim to carry their World Cup momentum into the next international campaign as his long-term renewal moves towards a formal announcement.
