Even in 2026, with 4K monitors widely available and modern GPUs built for high-resolution gaming, Steam’s hardware trends suggest a simpler reality: most PC players are still gaming at 1920×1080. The most common display resolution on Steam isn’t a new standard—it’s the Full HD mode that has been around for years, and it remains the default choice for the majority of the platform.

Steam’s user base also gives these figures meaningful weight. With Steam averaging more than 35 million daily concurrent users, the platform’s hardware stats are often used as a practical snapshot of what PC gamers actually run, not what specs people claim to want. Among those users, the resolution picture stands out as particularly persistent: 51.10% of players report using 1920×1080 (Full HD).

Full HD’s lead is followed by 2560×1440, commonly marketed as “2K,” though 1440p is the accurate way to describe the resolution. This option accounts for 21.46% of Steam players’ setups. Meanwhile, 4K remains a minority choice on the platform, with just 4.95% using 3840×2160 to play.

The reason isn’t hard to understand. Competitive and performance-focused players frequently prefer Full HD because it can deliver higher frame rates, since the GPU has fewer pixels to render than it would at higher resolutions. In practice, that means smoother gameplay even when hardware varies, and that makes 1080p an attractive baseline for many players.

Cost is another factor. Full HD monitors with high refresh rates—such as 144 Hz—can often be found for under 100 euros, while moving up in resolution typically increases monitor pricing. Higher resolution also tends to raise the performance demands placed on the graphics card, which can make upgrades to support 1440p or 4K feel less practical for players who want to keep spending closer to a mid-range GPU level.

With these numbers, the takeaway is clear: despite years of aggressive 4K promotion from manufacturers, Steam players are still overwhelmingly choosing the resolution that best balances speed, compatibility, and price—making 1920×1080 the center of gravity for PC gaming right now.
