Tammy Abraham Brace Fires Aston Villa Past Coventry in Carabao Cup
Aston Villa are through to the Carabao Cup fourth round after Tammy Abraham struck twice in a 3-1 win over Coventry City, delivering a timely answer to mounting competition for his place.
Villa take control at Coventry
- Abraham put Villa ahead inside seven minutes, ending a scoring wait that had lasted since April.
- Coventry hit back through Victor Torp, whose 25-yard free-kick flew into the top corner. Gustavo Hamer also tested Villa from distance as the hosts briefly sensed a route back into the tie.
- Ross Barkley restored the visitors’ advantage before half-time, arriving unmarked to head home from a corner.
- Just before the hour, Abraham sealed the result. John McGinn’s corner found the striker, who held off Coventry debutant Stephen Mfuni before applying the finish.
Unai Emery made seven alterations to the team beaten by Nottingham Forest, but Villa’s changed side took advantage of Coventry’s frailty through the middle.
McGinn had already gone close before Abraham’s decisive second goal, while Villa now have a fourth-round tie to use as a platform after losing three of their first four Premier League matches.
Abraham stakes his claim
The 3-1 victory came after a summer in which Abraham had been challenged to offer more on the pitch, with Emery prepared to sanction his departure.
Abraham turned down loan opportunities with Ipswich Town and Everton, choosing instead to compete for a Villa role. The £65 million signing of Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea had increased the pressure, but the forward’s two composed finishes underlined his determination to remain part of Emery’s plans.
He will now push for a place in Villa’s upcoming league line-ups as the club look to turn their early-season form around.
Coventry’s difficult run continues
For Coventry, the defeat was a fifth loss in six matches. Torp’s effort was their first goal at home this season, but the result extended a damaging defensive run: they have conceded 15 times in all competitions.
That comes immediately after Sunday’s 5-0 defeat to Brighton, leaving Coventry with an urgent need to arrest a miserable start.
