Tim Ream retires from USMNT after 16-year international career
Tim Ream has retired from the United States national team, ending a 16-year international career that began in November 2010 and took him to two World Cups.
The 38-year-old Charlotte FC defender confirmed the decision in his hometown of St. Louis on Tuesday. Ream said the plan had been discussed before the latest camp and that he will no longer be available for the USMNT.
“I had previously said I would not leave the national team until I stopped playing altogether, but the players coming through are younger and younger,” Ream said. “It had already been agreed before this camp that I would not continue as a national-team player. It is retirement. We spoke about it as a recognition, but that is the end for me.”
He added: “I am proud to have been involved for 16 years, but the moment has come to move on from playing for the national team.”
A career of returns and major tournaments
Only DaMarcus Beasley had a longer span between a first and final USMNT appearance among American outfield players. Ream made his debut nearly 16 years ago, but his path through the squad was far from straightforward.
He collected seven caps in 2010 and 11 the following year, before dropping out of the picture until returning after the 2014 World Cup. He did not play for the United States at all in 2018, then made 14 appearances during 2019.
Ream featured only six times across the next two years, yet earned a surprise recall for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He quickly established himself in the starting side there and remained a key figure through the cycle leading into the 2026 finals.
At this summer’s World Cup, his last tournament with the United States, Ream captained the team and started four matches.
His honours with the national side include CONCACAF Nations League triumphs in 2020 and 2024, alongside appearances at the 2022 and 2026 World Cups.
Ream reflects on USMNT journey
Rather than selecting one defining match or trophy, Ream said the full experience — including difficult stretches away from the squad — shaped his pride in the career.
He described the previous four years as his most enjoyable period with the national team, while stressing that it did not diminish the earlier stages of his journey. Ream said overcoming setbacks and continuing through turbulent periods made the final total of 16 years especially meaningful.
What happens next
Ream has not announced any decision on his club future and will continue with Charlotte FC for now.
Charlotte’s push for silverware is his immediate priority. Ream said the squad has been in good form and has a strong dressing room, with any decision about his future to wait until the season is over.
“We want to win a trophy,” he said. “After the season ends, we can work out what comes next, but nothing will be decided or made public before the final ball has been kicked.”
