Tuchel warns absent Palmer and Mainoo over England squad places
England head coach Thomas Tuchel has warned that players who miss international camps risk losing ground in the squad, with Cole Palmer again absent through ongoing pain.
What we know
- Tuchel is preparing England for matches against Spain, the Czech Republic and Croatia, starting with Spain.
- Chelsea forward Palmer and Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo are among the withdrawals from the group.
- Palmer has no fresh injury, but Tuchel said the 24-year-old has discomfort and pain that stops him performing at his required level.
- The Chelsea player has featured regularly under Xabi Alonso despite a chronic groin problem. His last England appearance came against Japan in March.
- Tuchel said Palmer has missed “far too many” camps, while stressing that he does not blame the attacker for his absence.
- Harry Kane has been held up as the standard for the squad. England’s captain has played the most minutes for club and country but still wants to report for duty.
Next step: Spain fixture puts focus on available players
Tuchel will select from the players in camp as England begin their three-match programme against Spain. The manager said places will be earned through training performances, with competition remaining open in every position.
“If you are not with us on the pitch, there is another level you cannot reach,” Tuchel said. He added that players must be present in camp and perform well there if they want to remain part of his plans.
Mainoo’s absence comes after he did not play during the summer World Cup. The Manchester United youngster now faces renewed competition in England’s midfield when he returns to fitness.
Tuchel insisted there is no threat or punishment attached to withdrawals, but made clear that availability will naturally shape his decisions. Players who are present now have the chance to press their claim before the Czech Republic and Croatia games.
