WayForward “Gemini” Reported Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Spin-Off

CD Projekt Red is still working on Cyberpunk 2, but fans who want something to play in the meantime may soon have to look beyond the main studio. A recent report points to a possible side project connected to the Netflix hit Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, tied to a codename spotted in a former WayForward employee’s portfolio.

The project in question is referred to as “Gemini,” which the portfolio materials reportedly link to the Edgerunners universe. While the exact status of any Cyberpunk spin-off at WayForward remains unconfirmed, the report claims that research and development for this effort was underway starting in 2025 and continuing into this year.

Based on the details described in the portfolio, Gemini was apparently envisioned as a “rollback-driven” 2.5D beat-’em-up. The same notes reportedly mentioned a “rollback-safe architecture,” along with “online transport integration,” which strongly suggests the game was being considered with online multiplayer functionality in mind.

WayForward’s involvement in licensed projects and action/brawler-style games is well established, including work on River City Girls. The developer is perhaps best known for the Shantae series, and it has also contributed to Nintendo Switch releases such as Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, along with titles like Contra 4 and The Mummy Demastered.

The Gemini findings also add context to WayForward’s broader workload. The report states that the studio had an unannounced Unreal Engine 5 project tied to a licensed franchise in development last year, but development on that title was supposedly halted in September 2025.

Outside the games side, Netflix’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is set to return for a second season this fall. CD Projekt also recently rebranded to CD Projekt Red, a change that could add some confusion for players following updates across the studio’s slate, especially as the company is also actively working on The Witcher 4.
