Quansah left Liverpool for Leverkusen in 2025, but the Anfield club protected their position by inserting a buy-back option worth £59.5m. The clause remains active until June 2027 and gives Liverpool a clear route to re-sign their former academy defender if they decide to move.

The 23-year-old has become one of the most closely watched centre-backs in the market. Chelsea are interested in a Premier League return, while Madrid have placed Quansah among their leading defensive targets.

His value has also been strengthened on the international stage. Quansah started three of England’s four Nations League fixtures, underlining his growing standing after his move to Germany.

Europa League stage could raise demand

Leverkusen’s Europa League campaign offers Quansah another major platform. The German side reached the 2024 final on their previous appearance in the competition and will again expect to make an impact in a tournament viewed as less demanding than in recent seasons.

European football analyst Andy Brassell believes Liverpool’s clause would still represent strong value for Leverkusen should it be used.

“If Liverpool use the buy-back, Leverkusen will not necessarily feel hard done by because it is a substantial amount,” Brassell said. “Quansah offers huge flexibility. He is comfortable in possession and can contribute going forward.”

Brassell expects a strong individual campaign, combined with a productive Leverkusen season, to bring further suitors into the race next year. He also raised the prospect of Quansah forming a defensive partnership with Jacquet, while stressing that the defender could be put up for sale if his progress continues.

What happens next: Leverkusen have resisted Arsenal’s opening move, while Liverpool can monitor Quansah’s development knowing their £59.5m option remains in place through June 2027.
