Arteta Sets Arsenal New Challenge Ahead of Sunderland Clash
Mikel Arteta has challenged Arsenal to sharpen their control and efficiency as the champions prepare to face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, with three consecutive league wins already secured at the start of their title defence.
Arsenal have made an eye-catching opening, playing with greater fluency while scoring every goal from open play. That marks a contrast with last season, when their title-winning campaign brought repeated focus on their strength from set pieces.
Arteta said he has been encouraged by the early performances but wants his side to keep developing. “I have really liked what I have seen,” he said. “It is about flair, but also ensuring the match develops in the way we want — with control, dominance and a threat in our thinking.”
The Arsenal manager believes returning players have increased his options and said the side must build on the work already done. He added that the combinations being created are becoming stronger, although the level of opposition and Arsenal’s own finishing will determine how dominant they can be.
Havertz gives Arsenal a moving target
Kai Havertz has been central to Arsenal’s attacking start, producing goals and chances while switching between different positions across the forward line.
Arteta believes the Germany international’s intelligence makes him particularly difficult for opponents to contain. Rather than assigning Havertz one fixed role, the manager said his best position depends on the requirements of each match and the team’s need to remain efficient and unpredictable.
“His greatest attribute is how intelligent he is,” Arteta said. “He reads situations five or 10 seconds before they happen. He does not have to stop and work it out; he reacts naturally, and he improves the players around him.”
Arteta also highlighted Havertz’s goals, chance creation and relentless work without the ball, adding that the forward is currently in a strong emotional place.
Odegaard fit again as Konsa settles fast
Martin Odegaard’s return to full fitness has given Arsenal another major lift. The Norway captain has dealt with injury problems across the previous two seasons, but has recently looked close to his best and scored decisive winners against Chelsea and Napoli.
At the other end, summer arrival Ezri Konsa has quickly become an influential figure in Arsenal’s defence. The £55 million signing from Aston Villa has moved straight into the starting side and brought a vocal, authoritative presence to the group.
Arteta said Konsa’s immediate impact should not be treated as routine, even if he had heard positive reports before the defender arrived.
“People who had worked with him — staff and players — all spoke about someone who brings people together,” Arteta said. “He has real personality and leadership. From his first day, the way he trained, spoke and carried himself was impressive. So far, he has done a very good job.”
