Barcelona Boosted by Raphinha’s Explosive New Central Role, Says Flick
Barcelona have no new injury concerns ahead of Sunday’s trip to Levante, with Hansi Flick’s leaders aiming to protect their perfect La Liga start after also winning in the Champions League during the week.
Flick said Frenkie de Jong and Roony Bardghji are still the only significant absentees, while he used his pre-match briefing to salute Raphinha’s explosive adaptation to a central role. The Brazilian has struck eight times in five appearances after being moved inside following Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres’ departures.
The switch came after Barcelona were unable to bring in Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez during the summer. It has instead put the former Leeds winger at the heart of a fast, high-scoring attack, with Lamine Yamal, Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi operating around him.
“Rapha has been fantastic,” Flick said. “He is operating at a different level. For me, in this form, he belongs among the world’s elite.”
Flick sees options beyond Raphinha
Raphinha is now the clear focal point, but Flick insisted Barcelona have several alternatives for the No. 9 position. Gabby and Hamza offer contrasting qualities, while Gordon, Adeyemi, Dani Olmo and Fermin Lopez can all be used through the middle if required.
Olmo and Lopez have already shown they can handle the role, Flick said, giving Barcelona flexibility as they continue a run that has brought four consecutive league victories and one European win.
The coach also highlighted the work being done at the other end of the pitch. Barcelona have allowed only three goals so far, and Flick believes improved defensive expected-goals numbers have been central to their early momentum.
Pau Cubarsi received particular praise after becoming a regular in the back line. Flick said the teenager has stepped up since the World Cup, combining greater physical strength with concentration and quality in possession.
“The expected-goals data against us is much better than it was last season, and that helps,” Flick said. “Pau is playing at a very high standard. He has confidence, stays focused and has become stronger physically, which matters hugely in his position. His work on the ball has also been excellent.”
Barcelona go into the Levante match two points ahead of Alaves and three clear of Real Madrid, who have already lost ground in the opening weeks.
