Morgan Rogers Scores Early as Hull City Fight Back to Lead Chelsea
Mohamed Belloumi scored twice in quick succession as Hull City overturned Morgan Rogers’ early opener to move 2-1 ahead at Chelsea.
What we know
- Rogers put Chelsea in front inside six minutes, finishing low into the corner after João Pedro released him through the middle.
- The 24-year-old’s strike was Hull’s first Premier League goal conceded this season.
- Chelsea paid a club-record £117m to sign the versatile forward from Aston Villa, and he has now registered a goal or assist in each of the Blues’ opening four league matches.
- Rogers is only the fifth Chelsea player to achieve that opening-four-games mark in the Premier League, following Didier Drogba, Cesc Fàbregas, Diego Costa and Eden Hazard.
- Drogba posted four goals and four assists across the first month of 2010/11. Fàbregas recorded six assists and Costa scored seven times at the start of 2014/15, while Costa repeated the feat with four goals and one assist in 2016/17. Hazard opened 2018/19 with two goals and two assists.
- Hull’s comeback began shortly before the half-hour, when Belloumi punished a lapse in Chelsea’s defending before adding a second moments later.
Chelsea must find a response
Rogers has delivered another decisive early contribution, but Chelsea’s immediate task is to regain control and tighten a back line exposed by Hull’s rapid turnaround. The Blues’ defensive issues have become the central concern after Belloumi’s double wiped out their fast start.
