Real Madrid forward Espi set a new Spain Under-21 record by scoring five goals and supplying two assists in the 2027 European Championship qualifying win over San Marino.

Record night for Spain Under-21 striker

The 21-year-old was making just his second Under-21 appearance and his first start when he produced the most prolific individual scoring display in the side’s history. No Spain U-21 player had previously struck five times in one match.

Espi repeatedly found space in and around the San Marino area as Spain overwhelmed their deep defence. The level of the opposition provides necessary context, but the forward’s movement, anticipation and finishing made the difference emphatic.

  • Five goals for Espi, a Spain U-21 single-match record.
  • Two further assists in the qualifying rout.
  • His first start and only his second appearance at Under-21 level.
  • The match was Spain’s penultimate qualifier for the 2027 finals.

Espi shares credit after landmark display

The striker called it a special evening and said he had been eager to join the squad and make an impact for the team.

He explained that Spain expected to spend long spells attacking San Marino’s packed penalty area, leaving him prepared to react to rebounds and loose balls. Espi also said the response from his team-mates made him proud, while dedicating the achievement to his family and friends.

Coach David Gordo praised the complete nature of the performance, highlighting both Espi’s scoring and his role in creating goals for others.

Madrid minutes remain limited

Espi returns to Real Madrid with growing international momentum, despite playing only 26 minutes across the club’s first eight matches of the season.

Those brief outings have already mattered. His late appearances against Espanyol and Elche helped Madrid collect four points, underlining his value as a penalty-box option.

The forward’s game is built more on sharp positioning, physical occupation of defenders and a ruthless response to loose balls than polished technique. He is not expected to unseat Kylian Mbappe in the starting side, but he offers Jose Mourinho a different solution when goals are needed late on against compact opponents.

Romania test comes before Madrid return

Spain Under-21 now face Romania in their final match of the international window. Victory would officially seal qualification for next year’s European Under-21 Championship, to be staged in Albania and Serbia.

For Espi, the next task is converting limited Madrid opportunities into further decisive moments as the schedule becomes more demanding. With fixtures set to pile up, his instinct inside the area could become increasingly valuable.
