Carragher Urges Premier League to Strip Man City of Titles

Jamie Carragher has called for Manchester City’s titles from the period covered by their Premier League financial-rule breaches to be removed, as the club prepare to appeal against a guilty verdict.

Calls grow for title sanctions

Manchester City have been found guilty of using arrangements said to have inflated income or lowered expenses, with the aim of avoiding Premier League and UEFA financial regulations. The scheme was valued at close to £1 billion.

The eight-time English champions could face major punishment, although City have maintained their position and moved immediately to challenge the ruling through an appeal.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher believes the consequences should include deleting the affected league triumphs from City’s official record, even if the question of reallocating championships to other clubs is separate.

He said the impact went beyond City, arguing that rival players were denied the emotional experience of winning decisive title races. Carragher said medals themselves matter less with time than the memories and feelings attached to those moments.

  • City have been found guilty over Premier League financial-rule breaches.
  • The allegations involved purported “sham” arrangements affecting revenue and costs.
  • The total value of the scheme was said to be nearly £1 billion.
  • City intend to appeal, leaving the final sporting sanctions unresolved.

Players and supporters face uncertainty

Carragher said he felt sympathy for City’s players, who he believes were assured there was no case to answer. He said the verdict could leave a cloud over significant parts of their careers, with achievements now likely to be questioned.

Micah Richards, who joined City as a 14-year-old and later played for the club, said the language contained in the findings left him devastated. The former defender said he remains deeply attached to City and was distressed by what supporters now have to endure.

Richards recalled a conversation with the man he stayed with as a young player, a City supporter of more than 60 years. He said the fan was in tears and seeking clarity that he could not provide.

While describing the reports as deeply damaging, Richards said he was also angry and confused because City have their own account of events to present during the appeal process.

Liverpool match next on the calendar

City’s next Premier League fixture is against Liverpool on October 11, with the fallout from the ruling likely to intensify the atmosphere around a rivalry that has defined many recent title battles.

Carragher described Liverpool as among those most affected by the case and expects an electric occasion when the sides meet. Liverpool and City have repeatedly fought for the biggest domestic prizes over the past decade.

Appeal will determine the next phase

The scale of City’s eventual penalty remains unclear. Possible consequences have prompted debate ranging from the removal of honours to more severe action against the club.

Richards said there would be no real winners whatever happens next. An appeal outcome in City’s favour would not end the damage to their reputation, he argued, while a final upheld finding would raise further questions about how the league responds.

He added that the issue reaches beyond one club, warning that the credibility of the Premier League itself could be affected and that the process may continue for years.
