Chelsea’s Estevao Faces Fresh Doubts After Limited Premier League Minutes
Estevao has played only 29 minutes of Premier League football for Chelsea this season, fuelling fresh uncertainty over the Brazilian teenager’s long-term place at Stamford Bridge despite his contract running until 2033.
The forward, widely known as Messinho, arrived from Palmeiras amid huge expectations after showing enough in his first months in England to excite Chelsea supporters. Injury then disrupted his debut campaign, ending his World Cup hopes and limiting his chance to build momentum.
Why Estevao’s minutes have dried up
- Estevao joined Chelsea from Palmeiras and made an early impression before injury curtailed his first season in west London.
- Xabi Alonso has since taken charge and installed a 3-4-2-1 formation, a shape with no natural winger positions.
- Chelsea also completed a £117 million ($156m) move for England international Rogers from Aston Villa, making him the costliest British player ever.
- With Rogers and Palmer among the attacking options, Estevao has been pushed into a reduced role and has featured for just 29 league minutes so far.
Nevin warns Chelsea not to waste elite talent
Former Chelsea player Pat Nevin believes Estevao has the quality to become an outstanding footballer, but doubts whether that development will happen at the club.
“When he came to Chelsea and played a few matches, I thought he was a magnificent player,” Nevin said. “I absolutely love him. He will be a great player, though perhaps not at Chelsea.”
Nevin, who spent five years at Chelsea between 1983 and 1988, said a January rethink would not surprise him. He stressed that the 18-year-old should not necessarily leave immediately, but argued that young elite players need regular senior football rather than scattered substitute appearances.
“Your career is short and you need plenty of matches behind you,” Nevin said. “By 20 or 21, you want to have played a couple of hundred. The top players establish themselves early, play constantly and learn what the game demands. That is the disappointing part here: it is not happening.”
He said injuries have played a part, while also cautioning against making too much of fears over young players being overused. In Nevin’s view, Chelsea’s tactical set-up and depth are the greater obstacles.
“The main issue is the system and the players available,” he added. “He could finish the season with 30 appearances, but some may only be 15-minute outings. That is not enough. He needs sustained football.”
What happens next
Estevao is committed to an eight-year Chelsea agreement, but Nevin believes the teenager could examine his options if his role does not grow. Chelsea are expected to resist any attempt to take him away, given his potential and the possibility that injuries to Rogers or Palmer could quickly create an opening.
Yet Nevin’s message was clear: a player of Estevao’s ability cannot be left waiting indefinitely. “Do not let that talent spend its life on the bench,” he said. “I do not think he will allow that to happen.”
