Portugal have sealed a UEFA Nations League quarter-final place with two group games remaining after taking 12 points from 12, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s future with the national side remains uncertain amid a reported rift with head coach Jorge Jesus.

The 39-year-old Al-Nassr forward is reportedly unwilling to return to the Portugal squad while Jesus remains in charge. Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, is based in Riyadh as he continues his chase for 1,000 career goals.

Reports claim Ronaldo was angered by recent comments surrounding his international situation and has made his stance clear: he does not intend to resume his Portugal career under the current manager.

Jesus leaves door open

Jesus insisted after Portugal’s win over Norway that a reunion remains possible. The coach said Ronaldo must first settle his own position ahead of the next squad announcement, but added that the forward would be welcome if he is fit, playing regularly and wants to represent the country again.

The Portugal boss has also sought to reduce the temperature around the dispute, describing it as a communication issue rather than an irreparable breakdown. Jesus believes the matter can be resolved and said there is no problem from his side.

Portugal progress without Ronaldo

On the pitch, Portugal have made an emphatic start under Jesus despite the absence of their long-standing captain. Four consecutive group-stage wins have put them first in Group Four on 12 points and confirmed their progression to the last eight ahead of schedule.

Jesus celebrated the run by stressing the team’s confidence after a perfect four-match record. Portugal’s recent performances have combined a broader attacking threat with defensive control, strengthening the coach’s position as the off-field row continues.

National debate grows

The situation has moved beyond football, with former politician António José Seguro publicly backing Ronaldo. Seguro argued that Portugal should not treat a player who has carried the country and its culture around the world in such a manner.

That intervention adds pressure on the Portuguese Football Federation as it weighs the future of its most recognisable player. The next call-up will show whether Ronaldo and Jesus can find a route back to working together — or whether Portugal’s record goalscorer remains outside the squad.
