Dest Earns Player of the Match as PSV Draw 1-1 with Shakhtar
Sergino Dest struck PSV Eindhoven’s equaliser as the Dutch champions began their Champions League campaign with a 1-1 home draw against Shakhtar Donetsk.
Dest was named Player of the Match after turning a difficult first half around at the Philips Stadion. Shakhtar, coached by Arda Turan, went ahead in stoppage time before the break when Gleiker Mendoza scored after the American defender had been left down following a forceful midfield challenge.
PSV answered soon after the restart. Armando Obispo pulled the ball back into the area and Dest arrived at the right moment to drive his finish into the net.
Peter Bosz’s team pushed for a winner in the closing stages but could not force a second goal, leaving both sides with a point from their opening league-phase fixture.
Dest frustrated despite recovery
Dest said PSV were left dissatisfied because they believed victory was within reach, even while recognising Shakhtar’s defensive discipline.
“We struggled to play through their defence,” Dest said. “They were very organised. Our tempo may have been too slow, but it changed in the second half. It is a draw against a strong side, but we felt we could have achieved more, which makes it disappointing.”
PSV found limited room during the opening 45 minutes against Shakhtar’s compact shape before improving their attacking rhythm after half-time.
Sano marks Champions League debut
Kodai Sano made his first official appearance in Europe’s top club competition and described the occasion as a childhood ambition fulfilled.
“I dreamed about this as a child,” Sano said. “For my first match, I am proud of myself. I’m very happy to wear this shirt and I think I have settled in well, but it was hard for us to create chances and we have to improve.”
PSV now turn back to domestic and European commitments with a clear focus on quicker ball movement, improved attacking combinations and greater consistency. Dest and Sano both believe those adjustments will be needed if Bosz’s side are to advance from the Champions League league phase.
