Fenerbahce Block Ismail Kartal Resignation After Roma Draw

Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim has moved to block Ismail Kartal’s resignation after the coach stunned the club by stepping down following Tuesday’s 1-1 Champions League draw with Roma.

Kartal announced his decision in his post-match press conference while the squad were still celebrating a hard-earned point in the dressing room. The development then reached players in the mixed zone, with England full-back Archie Brown learning of it during his own television interview.

Brown, 24, looked to his interpreter in disbelief after being told of the announcement. “What do you mean, resign? What? As coach? I had no idea about this,” said the former Derby County academy player.

Yildirim intervened soon after Kartal’s statement and publicly said he would not accept the coach’s resignation, leaving Fenerbahce facing uncertainty over their manager despite their encouraging return to Europe’s top competition.

Brown rescues point after Cristante opener

Roma had taken the lead before half-time through Bryan Cristante, whose low strike from 20 yards beat the Fenerbahce goalkeeper. But Brown hauled the Turkish side level shortly after the interval, lifting the ball over Mile Svilar after Mason Greenwood found him with a sharp pass.

Fenerbahce pressed for a winner as the second half wore on, while Roma brought Romelu Lukaku off the bench in search of a late decisive goal. Neither team could break the deadlock again.

Brown was named Player of the Match after his equaliser and a strong display at full-back. He felt Fenerbahce had done enough to take all three points after taking control following the break.

“I’m very happy. It was an important goal and we deserved it,” Brown said. “We created plenty of chances and perhaps should have won. After we found our rhythm, we were in charge for much of the second half.”

He added that the result against a talented Roma squad can provide a platform for the campaign. “It was a tough match against a good side with many quality players. There is definitely something to build on. We go into the next one trying to get three points.”

Fenerbahce’s next Champions League assignment comes on 14 October, when they travel to England to face Aston Villa. Before then, the club must establish whether Kartal remains in charge after Yildirim’s attempt to reverse the resignation.
