Dominic Solanke’s Late Goal Earns 10-Man Tottenham Draw at Manchester United
Dominic Solanke struck in the second minute of stoppage time to earn Tottenham Hotspur a 1-1 draw at Manchester United, with Roberto De Zerbi’s side rescuing a point despite playing the closing stages with 10 men after Rodrigo Bentancur’s red card.
Solanke punishes United after Spurs survive late pressure
Tottenham were still without a first win of the season, but their response at Old Trafford carried weight. Bryan Mbeumo had put United ahead in the 73rd minute, and Spurs then lost Bentancur only minutes later following his introduction from the bench.
United appeared set to capitalise on the extra man, but Spurs stayed compact, defended their box and retained enough attacking ambition to force a final opening. Sandro Tonali supplied the decisive delivery in added time, with Solanke converting to level the match.
The late goal silenced the Stretford End and rewarded De Zerbi’s decision to keep his centre-forward on the pitch while pursuing an equaliser rather than settling for damage limitation.
Defensive structure kept Tottenham alive
The opening hour was short on clear chances, shaped instead by pressing traps and tightly packed midfield lines. Tottenham’s young goalkeeper made three important saves as United sought control, while his positioning limited the damage before Mbeumo’s clinical finish.
Archie Gray handled a demanding assignment at right-back with composure, particularly in his defensive duels against United’s wide attacks. His booking in the ninth minute of stoppage time, for a tactical foul, underlined the pressure Spurs were absorbing.
On the opposite side, Destiny Udogie was largely pinned back by United’s threat in wide zones before Micky van de Ven replaced him immediately after the opening goal. Van de Ven’s pace then became crucial as Spurs attempted to stop United counter-attacks with a man fewer.
Tottenham’s central defenders also stood up to United’s rotations, winning aerial challenges and making key clearances. One centre-half was withdrawn in the 89th minute as De Zerbi made a final attacking adjustment, while another remained on to help reshape the team following Bentancur’s dismissal.
Midfield changes altered the contest
Spurs made a cluster of changes in the 66th minute. A Swedish midfielder was removed after struggling to impose his rhythm against United’s crowded middle, while another attacking midfielder also departed after finding little room between the lines.
Bentancur entered during those switches but his cameo quickly turned costly. He was sent off in the 78th minute, leaving Tottenham a man down for the final phase.
Tonali, however, remained influential under pressure. He kept possession moving and supplied the cross for Solanke’s equaliser. A substitute introduced in the 74th minute also helped Spurs hold the ball more effectively, while another fresh runner stretched United’s defence late on.
