Dominik Szoboszlai has committed his future to Liverpool until 2031, ending immediate speculation over a possible move that had linked the Hungary captain with Real Madrid.

Vladimir Smicer believes Szoboszlai can eventually take over as Liverpool captain when Virgil van Dijk’s contract expires next summer.
The former Liverpool midfielder said he can see Szoboszlai inheriting the role in time, while stressing that comparisons with Steven Gerrard are difficult because Gerrard’s lifelong connection to the city and club was unique.
Smicer said Szoboszlai has only been at Liverpool for three years, unlike Gerrard, who spent his entire life tied to the club, but feels the Hungarian is moving in the right direction. He added that Gerrard would likely welcome any future description of Szoboszlai as his successor.
Szoboszlai has also drawn comparisons with former Ballon d’Or winner Pavel Nedved. While matching Gerrard’s standing among Liverpool supporters would be an enormous task, captaincy and major trophies could further strengthen his claim to become a defining modern Anfield player.
