Donnarumma backs Mancini as Italy prepare for Belgium Nations League test
Gianluigi Donnarumma has welcomed Roberto Mancini back into the Italy fold and said the Azzurri are already adapting to the returning coach’s tactical demands before Friday’s Nations League clash with Belgium.
Italy host Belgium at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico, with kick-off set for 19:45 UK time. It is the first major test of Mancini’s new spell in charge, and the Azzurri have little room for a slow start in a Group A section that also includes France and Turkiye.
Donnarumma, a key figure in Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph under Mancini, insisted the squad’s commitment cannot depend on who occupies the dugout. “The right spirit must always be present because we are playing for our country,” the goalkeeper said. “Each coach has his own ideas, and we are working on particular aspects with Mancini.”
The goalkeeper hopes the reunion can deliver more of the success Italy enjoyed during Mancini’s previous reign, when the team made European Championship history. “We achieved something special at the Euros and we want to do it again,” Donnarumma added.
Donnarumma relishes Italy return
Playing for the national team remains a major source of pride for Donnarumma, particularly since his move away from Serie A. He said representing Italy has become even more meaningful while based abroad, with the goalkeeper admitting he misses home and values every chance to return for the biggest international occasions.
He also spoke warmly about being back at the Olimpico, a stadium he associates with memorable Italy moments. Donnarumma said he has learned from every coach and staff member he has encountered and intends to keep developing.
Next comes Belgium, with Mancini’s early training-ground changes set to face immediate examination. Italy know a positive result in Rome would provide an important platform in a demanding Nations League group.
