Donyell Malen Praises Dybala Partnership After Roma Win at Torino

Donyell Malen hailed Paulo Dybala after Roma’s win at Torino, with the Dutch forward saying their link-up is becoming a key part of Gian Piero Gasperini’s side. Malen struck in the victory at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino after Dybala’s pass, although a touch from the goalkeeper meant the Argentine was not credited with the assist.

“It is enjoyable playing alongside Dybala,” Malen said. “His ball for the goal was excellent. It is a shame he did not get the assist, but scoring was what mattered.”

The 25-year-old’s latest goal took him to six in Roma’s first four matches of the season. That return matches Francesco Totti’s opening burst in 2001-02 and places Malen among a very small group in club history.

Only three Roma players have managed more than five goals across the opening four fixtures of a campaign. Pedro Manfredini remains ahead with seven in 1960-61, while Malen has now joined Totti on six. Malen said he understands the significance of being mentioned alongside Roma’s iconic former captain and is enjoying both the team’s football and his record-breaking start.

Gasperini managing Roma’s momentum

Gasperini removed Malen early in the second half at Torino, a decision the Roma coach said was designed to protect his squad during a demanding schedule. It was the team’s third match in eight days, and the coach stressed that regular starters cannot be expected to complete every game.

He believes even a 20- or 30-minute rest can have an important effect over the season, while also giving other members of the squad the chance to develop. Gasperini wants those behind leading figures such as Dybala and Malen to be ready to take responsibility when called upon.

Roma have now won four matches in a row and face reigning champions Inter next in an early test of their Scudetto credentials. Gasperini described Inter as Serie A’s benchmark and the side widely regarded as Italy’s strongest, while adding that Como are beginning to close the gap.
