Estudiantes Open Talks to Re-Sign Marcos Rojo from Racing Club
Estudiantes have opened talks to bring Marcos Rojo back to La Plata, with Racing weighing an early release for the veteran defender following their Copa Argentina quarter-final exit.
The 36-year-old completed the full match as Racing surrendered a two-goal advantage and lost 3-2 to Boca. Substitute Enner Valencia struck three second-half headers to send Boca through and deepen the uncertainty around Rojo’s next step.
Estudiantes seek immediate agreement
Estudiantes have made formal contact with Rojo’s representatives over an immediate move. The La Plata club want Racing to agree a compensation settlement that would end his contract ahead of its scheduled expiry in December.
Rojo joined Racing as a free agent in August 2025, but Estudiantes believe his experience could strengthen a squad competing on several fronts. Racing must now choose between allowing the centre-back to leave early or keeping him through to the end of his deal.
A return to his first club
Estudiantes would represent a third spell for the 61-cap Argentina international at the club where he developed in the academy. Rojo left for Spartak Moscow in 2010, later played for Manchester United, and returned to Estudiantes on loan in 2020.
He moved to Boca in 2021 before signing for Racing last year. A new switch to El Pincha would complete another emotional homecoming for the defender.
What happens next
A quick agreement could make Rojo available for Estudiantes’ Copa Libertadores semi-final against Flamengo. His potential arrival would also add leadership and depth for the club’s Torneo Clausura challenge and its continuing Copa Argentina campaign.
