Ethan Mbappe has been handed a three-match UEFA suspension after his straight red card for Lille against Real Betis, ruling him out of Champions League games against Arsenal, Galatasaray and Bodo/Glimt.
UEFA punishment follows Betis altercation
The 19-year-old midfielder was dismissed during Lille’s 3-2 defeat to Betis three weeks ago. UEFA’s disciplinary decision cited “assaulting another player” following an incident involving Betis centre-back Natan.
Footage showed Mbappe catching the Brazilian with an elbow as Natan moved behind him. Natan had reportedly made comments to the Lille player before the reaction, but a VAR review resulted in an immediate red card and UEFA has now added a further three-game continental ban.
How the suspension will affect Lille

Limited European experience, growing Lille role
The Betis match was only Mbappe’s third Champions League appearance. His other two came in the 2024-25 campaign, when Lille beat Feyenoord 6-1 and drew 1-1 with Borussia Dortmund.
Despite the disciplinary blow, he has become an increasingly important option for Lille this season. Across all competitions, Mbappe has played six times, recording one goal and one assist.
