Jaedyn Shaw’s historic double sends Gotham FC six points clear

Gotham FC moved six points clear at the top of the NWSL with four matches remaining after a 3-1 win over Chicago Stars, while Jaedyn Shaw’s two-goal display carried her to a historic 25 career league goals. Shaw is now the youngest player in NWSL history to reach that mark, with her eighth and ninth strikes of the campaign extending Gotham’s push for a first-ever NWSL Shield.

Sam Kerr also played a decisive role in Gotham’s latest victory, creating the opening goal and scoring with a header as the Bats stretched their club-record home unbeaten run to 11 games. The result confirmed Chicago’s elimination from playoff contention. The Stars remain bottom on 17 points after a 5-19-2 record.

Racing Louisville and Bay FC also saw their postseason hopes end. Louisville, second from bottom with 23 points after a 2-0 defeat to San Diego Wave, suffered a 17th loss of the season. Bay went down 3-1 at Orlando Pride despite Racheal Kundananji scoring her third goal of the year; they sit 13th on 26 points, level with Boston Legacy.

Playoff fight tightens

North Carolina Courage lost 2-1 to Utah Royals, but Ashley Sanchez reached 20 goals for the season to match Temwa Chawinga’s NWSL single-season scoring record. Utah led, conceded a penalty before half-time, then found a second goal to claim the points. The Royals are fourth, one point behind third-placed Washington Spirit, while the Courage are ninth and just outside the playoff places.

Washington’s difficult spell continued with an 88th-minute home defeat to Angel City. The 1-0 upset kept Angel City’s late-season charge alive, although the Los Angeles side are still searching for a sustained winning run. Portland Thorns, meanwhile, had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Houston Dash after conceding inside 10 minutes and scoring a late equaliser. Houston remain 12th, with rookies Kat Rader and Kate Faasse providing an attacking lift.

Seattle Reign climbed through a 2-0 win against Boston, with Jess Fishlock scoring both goals on Friday. Reign are eighth and face a crucial Friday meeting with North Carolina as they aim to remain above the playoff line. Boston dropped to 14th, tied on 26 points with Bay.

Kansas City Current beat Denver Summit FC 4-1, powered by Haley Hopkins’ hat-trick. Denver had taken a 13th-minute lead through Lindsey Heaps but could not hold it, leaving the Summit 10th and in need of more victories to stay in the postseason race.

Orlando’s 3-1 success over Bay came through Haley McCutcheon’s double and a stoppage-time goal from Jacqueline Ovalle. The Pride are 11th and remain far from secure in the playoff battle.

San Diego stayed near the summit by defeating Racing Louisville 2-0 with two first-half goals. The Wave have continued to win without Cat Macario, who has not yet appeared since joining the club and has been placed on the season-ending injury list.
