Frank Lampard Urges Caution as Manchester City Appeal Financial Ruling
Frank Lampard has urged caution over Manchester City’s appeal against a ruling on alleged financial misconduct, insisting the case must run its course before outsiders draw conclusions.
Appeal leaves major questions unresolved
City were found by an independent commission to have used “sham” agreements with commercial partners from 2009-10 to 2017-18. The ruling said the arrangements formed a disguised funding operation which inflated reported revenue by £830m.
The club immediately lodged an appeal and has rejected the findings. City argue that the decision is an opinion containing significant mistakes in law, principle and fact, and say the verdict is unsafe.
Lampard, who spent one season at the Etihad, said the pending appeal made a definitive reaction impossible. He stressed that he has no inside knowledge of the case and does not know when the process will be completed.
Lampard backs Maresca amid City scrutiny
The former Chelsea manager also pointed to the scale of the task facing Enzo Maresca and his staff. Maresca replaced Pep Guardiola in the summer and City have begun the Premier League season with five wins from five, putting them first on 15 points.
Lampard said managers regularly deal with circumstances beyond public view. While the legal case is now in the open, he believes City still possess a deep squad full of high-level players and that the on-pitch consequences will become clearer over time.
- An independent commission ruled that City’s commercial arrangements between 2009-10 and 2017-18 improperly increased revenue.
- The alleged inflation was put at £830m, with the contracts described as artificial.
- City challenged the ruling immediately, disputing both its legal basis and factual conclusions.
- Lampard called for patience while the appeal is heard, as Maresca’s side continue their perfect league start.
Lampard’s unusual Manchester City chapter
Lampard’s connection with City began after he was announced as a New York City FC player in July 2014, ahead of the MLS club’s first season in 2015. He then joined Manchester City for the 2014-15 campaign in what was initially presented as a temporary loan.
His time in Manchester lasted until the end of that season, but the arrangement became controversial when it emerged that he had made a non-binding commitment to New York rather than signed a full contract with the American side.
On the field, Lampard scored eight times and supplied three assists in 38 matches in all competitions for City.
He subsequently spent two seasons with New York City FC, scoring 15 goals in 31 appearances. His contract ended in November 2016, with retirement following months later.
Key takeaways
- Manchester City’s appeal means the commission’s ruling is not the final stage of the process.
- Lampard has declined to speculate, citing his distance from the case and uncertainty over its timetable.
- Maresca’s City are top of the Premier League after taking the maximum 15 points from five fixtures.
- Lampard’s one-year spell at City produced eight goals and three assists in 38 outings.
