Erling Haaland has urged Manchester City supporters to remain united and positive as the club prepares for the next stage of its financial case and a pivotal week of fixtures.

Key takeaways

  • Haaland called on City fans and players to stay together, keep smiling and focus on winning matches.
  • The forward says he feels a personal bond with the club’s supporters, having grown up around City through his father Alf-Inge.
  • An independent commission upheld more than 100 alleged financial-rule breaches against the Premier League champions.
  • The findings centred on claimed revenue inflation totalling £830m across the 2009/10 to 2017/18 seasons.
  • City are due at Liverpool on Sunday before hosting Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain.

Haaland calls for unity as appeal looms

City’s striker delivered a reassuring message amid the uncertainty surrounding the club. He said everyone connected with the side must support one another, look forward rather than dwell on events off the pitch, and enjoy the challenge of competing.

Haaland also underlined his connection to the fanbase. The Norway international, whose father Alf-Inge played for City, said he cares deeply about both the city and its supporters, adding that he sees himself as a fan too.

The case has cast a shadow over the champions after the commission found that City had used what it described as a disguised funding arrangement, involving non-genuine commercial agreements, over nine seasons from 2009/10.

The panel concluded that the arrangements were intended to boost reported income by £830m and evade financial restrictions imposed by the Premier League and UEFA. More than 100 breaches were upheld, including accusations that the club had not acted in good faith during the lengthy inquiry.

An appeal could yet extend the process. Revised Premier League rules seek to complete appeals inside 12 weeks, but City are expected to contend that those provisions cannot be applied retrospectively to proceedings which began in 2023.

City have also questioned whether the process has been sufficiently impartial. In a previous statement, the club said it had followed due process for eight years in the expectation of an independent and fair regulator, and maintained it could not comment fully until the remaining proceedings had concluded.

Liverpool test comes before PSG visit

While the legal battle continues, City’s first team face a demanding run of matches. Enzo Maresca’s side travel to Anfield on Sunday to meet Liverpool, then return to the Etihad Stadium for the visit of European champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Haaland has begun the Premier League campaign perfectly and is not allowing the noise around the club to distract him. He described meetings with Liverpool as consistently special occasions, recalling how he watched the rivalry involving Pep Guardiola and Jürgen Klopp while playing in Salzburg and Dortmund.

The striker said he has experienced every outcome at Anfield — victory, a draw and defeat — and stressed that each Premier League encounter brings its own challenge, particularly against Liverpool.
