Gary Neville warns Michael Carrick over Manchester United’s winless run
Manchester United’s 1-1 draw at Leeds United has given Michael Carrick a small platform to build on, but Gary Neville has warned that the manager’s position will become increasingly difficult if results do not improve before December and January.
The point at Elland Road stopped neither United’s slide nor the growing pressure around the club. They are now six matches without a win, sit 13th in the Premier League and have collected only seven points from seven games. Carrick’s team have also yet to defeat a side that played in the top flight last season.
Neville nevertheless saw signs of progress in the Leeds performance, arguing that a hard-earned draw could represent United’s first meaningful step under Carrick after expectations fell sharply in recent weeks. He believes the manager may need to prioritise defensive stability and use attacking options such as Matheus Cunha and Marcus Rashford from the bench when required.
“The standard and expectation are very low at the moment,” Neville said, while describing the result as a possible “stepping stone” for Carrick. He added that United could take confidence from the display and find a workable model by becoming more solid.
Top-five target cannot slip
Neville said Champions League qualification remains essential for United, setting out his view that fourth place would exceed expectations, fifth would meet them and sixth would fall short. In his assessment, finishing outside the top five would leave the club trapped in a damaging cycle: missing elite European football would reduce both transfer appeal and income.
He placed the potential financial hit at between £60m and £70m, while also warning that Europa League football and its Thursday-night schedule would represent a significant step down. Neville believes fifth is the minimum required if Carrick and United are to continue progressing with investment.
United must now turn the Elland Road point into a result that changes momentum. Bournemouth are next in the Premier League and Neville has identified that fixture as crucial, with an away trip to Chelsea also looming. Brighton, Liverpool and Aston Villa have begun to pick up results, increasing the difficulty of United’s chase.
Before those league tests, Carrick’s side face Como in the Champions League on Wednesday. The coming weeks will determine whether the Leeds draw was a foundation for recovery or merely another missed opportunity in a worsening run.
