Germany Secure Noahkai Banks as Defender Completes USMNT Switch

Germany have secured teenage defender Banks after he completed a one-time international switch on Friday and joined the German Under-21 squad for the current break.

Germany choice ends USMNT eligibility

Banks had previously featured for United States youth teams and attended one senior USMNT camp in 2025, but his completed switch means he can no longer represent the Americans.

The decision removes another option from a United States centre-back pool undergoing change. Banks had been weighing up both nations before making his final call in favour of Germany.

Pochettino accepts defender’s decision

USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino said Banks contacted the staff directly to confirm that he had chosen Germany.

Pochettino stressed that the national team want players fully invested in the programme, rather than those still undecided over their international future.

He said Banks had been open in earlier conversations, repeatedly indicating that he remained unsure whether to represent the United States or Germany. Pochettino added that the squad needs players desperate to wear the badge and without doubts over their commitment.

US Soccer focus remains on dual-national pathway

US Soccer chief executive JT Batson said recruiting players with more than one international option is rarely simple, but insisted the programme’s aim is unchanged: to create the strongest possible environment for those who want to play for the United States.

Batson said the federation must identify, engage and develop eligible players, from youth international opportunities through to the senior side. He also pointed to the large number of young players across the country hoping to reach the national team.

What happens next for the United States
