Reece James was ruled out of Chelsea’s Friday trip to Brentford after failing a final fitness check on a minor hamstring injury, with head coach Alonso confirming the captain was not ready to return.

Joao Pedro also absent despite fast start

Chelsea were also without Joao Pedro for the Brentford match. The forward has opened the Premier League campaign with three goals and three assists in four appearances, including both a goal and an assist against Hull City.

Danny Welbeck came into the attack in Pedro’s place as Chelsea turned to their squad options.
