Federico Chiesa is attracting interest from Inter, Atalanta and Lazio as Liverpool’s unused winger edges towards a possible Serie A return when the winter market opens on Friday, January 1.

Informal contact has begun between the three Italian clubs and Chiesa’s camp. The 28-year-old has not played a competitive minute for Liverpool in the opening months of 2026-27 and was left out of the club’s Champions League squad, underlining his reduced role at Anfield.

Italian clubs track Chiesa exit

  • Inter, Atalanta and Lazio are monitoring the Italy international’s availability.
  • A loan or permanent transfer back to Italy is being considered as January approaches.
  • Chiesa remained at Liverpool through a summer rebuild that included Mohamed Salah’s departure for Trabzonspor, but his standing has not improved.

Liverpool signed Chiesa from Juventus in August 2024 for around £10 million. The forward arrived after four productive seasons in Turin but has struggled to establish himself in the Premier League, with fitness issues and competition for attacking places limiting his influence.

He has played 50 matches in all competitions for the Reds, scoring five goals and creating another five. Chiesa was part of Liverpool’s Premier League-winning squad in 2024-25.

Italy place also at stake

A move could be important for Chiesa’s international future. He has not been included in any Italy squad selected by new head coach Roberto Mancini, who has favoured younger players during the Azzurri’s rebuild after they missed a third straight World Cup in the summer.

Former Italy manager Luciano Spalletti urged Chiesa last year to leave Liverpool and revive his career away from English football. Before his move to Merseyside, Chiesa won two Coppa Italia trophies and the Supercoppa Italiana with Juventus, as well as Euro 2020 with Italy.

What happens next

Chiesa’s representatives and the interested Serie A sides are expected to assess terms ahead of the January 1 window opening. Liverpool must then decide whether to sanction a temporary exit or negotiate a permanent sale for a player currently outside their European plans.
