Jamal Musiala in Bayern Squad for Schalke Trip After Missing Season Start
Jamal Musiala has travelled with Bayern Munich for Saturday’s Bundesliga trip to Schalke 04, putting the 23-year-old in line for his first competitive appearance of the 2026-27 season.
Vincent Kompany will make the final call after Bayern’s last training session, but Musiala’s inclusion in the group for the Veltins-Arena is a major step after he missed the opening three league matches.
Quick facts
- Musiala is part of Bayern’s squad for Saturday afternoon’s match at Schalke.
- The playmaker has not played competitively this season after missing Bayern’s first three Bundesliga fixtures.
- Serge Gnabry is unavailable this weekend, with Bayern hoping he can return next week.
- Musiala has also been registered in Bayern’s Champions League squad for Thursday’s game against Bodo/Glimt.
Kompany said Musiala had completed a full and encouraging training week, while stressing that Bayern would not take risks with the midfielder. The coach said the player was in a positive stage of his recovery and that his wellbeing remained the key consideration.
“We will judge how he comes through today’s session and choose what is right for Jamal and for the team,” Kompany said. “The priority is that he feels good.”
Musiala’s absence followed two collapses in pre-season, first during a friendly win over 1. FC Heidenheim and previously in a Telekom Cup match against RB Leipzig. He later disclosed that he had been diagnosed with short, temporary absence episodes linked to a neurological dysfunction, with the condition described as readily treatable.
Bayern have kept the situation under close medical supervision. Kompany has sought to ease the attention around Musiala, saying the club’s staff know how to respond should another episode occur.
The Bayern boss said a further collapse, whether in the coming days, weeks or many matches from now, would not be treated internally as a major issue because the club understands the condition and expects Musiala to return to being “a completely normal athlete” in time.
His possible comeback arrives as Bayern’s schedule begins to tighten with European football starting. What happens next is dependent on Saturday’s training response: if Musiala gets the green light, he could make his competitive return at Schalke before Bayern turn towards Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League.
