Jean Butez Earns First France Call-Up at 31 After Risser Withdrawal
Como goalkeeper Jean Butez has been drafted into the France squad for the first time after Robin Risser pulled out with physical problems, making the 31-year-old the oldest Les Bleus debut call-up since 1976.
Risser withdrawal opens the door
RC Lens keeper Risser left the group after the club and France medical teams reviewed his condition. His absence has handed Butez an unexpected place in Zinedine Zidane’s squad.

Butez said he learned of the call shortly after returning from a Como away fixture alongside team-mate Lucas Da Cunha. While disappointed for Risser, he admitted the opportunity had caught him completely off guard.
“Lucas and I were returning from an away match, and the message came through when we landed,” Butez said. “The statistic is a nice one to have, but there is no age limit on a first call-up. I certainly did not see it coming.”
The keeper added that he had arrived to cover for Risser and enjoy an opportunity to experience the France set-up. “I am here to discover this group and this environment, and I could not be happier,” he said.
Experience added to Zidane’s goalkeeping group
Butez has already completed his first France training session, working under newly appointed goalkeeping coach Fabien Barthez. He brings substantial senior pedigree despite the late international breakthrough.
