Liverpool Assess Jeremy Jacquet Hamstring Injury Before Man City Test
Liverpool are assessing a left-hamstring strain suffered by Jeremy Jacquet after the defender missed France’s 4-1 Nations League win against Belgium on Monday.
France confirmed the 21-year-old had picked up the problem, while Zinedine Zidane described Jacquet as only “slightly injured” after the game. Liverpool now face an anxious wait over his availability for Manchester City’s visit on Sunday.
Jacquet doubt hits Liverpool defence
Jacquet had appeared in France’s previous two fixtures, which were his first senior international outings, before being omitted against Belgium. He has been ever-present for Liverpool this term, playing all seven matches and starting six of them next to Virgil van Dijk at centre-back.
Andoni Iraola has Joe Gomez and Barcelona loanee Ronald Araújo available as potential replacements, but losing Jacquet would weaken Liverpool ahead of a major Premier League fixture.
Forward concerns also mounting
- Alexander Isak returned early from Sweden duty after one match because of a minor thigh issue.
- Cody Gakpo’s Netherlands spell was also cut short after he sustained an ankle injury, with his condition viewed as the more serious concern.
- Summer arrival Bradley Barcola may be required through the middle despite being more naturally suited to a wide role.
- Florian Wirtz could also be pushed forward from his usual number 10 position if Liverpool are short in attack.
What happens next
Liverpool will check Jacquet, Isak and Gakpo when the international break ends before naming their squad for Sunday’s match with City. It will be City’s first game since an independent commission found the club guilty on the vast majority of charges connected to financial-rule breaches.
