United end European scoring drought
Matheus Cunha delivered the breakthrough shortly before the half-hour, converting Patrick Dorgu’s accurate cross from close range with a fierce finish into the top-left corner.
It was United’s first Champions League goal since Scott McTominay struck in the 3-3 group-stage draw against Galatasaray on November 29, 2023. The club had missed out on qualification for the tournament in each of the previous two seasons, having last played in it during the campaign that ended with a 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich.
Three goals put Sabah away before half-time
United turned Cunha’s opener into a commanding interval lead with two further strikes before the break.
- Bruno Fernandes made it 2-0 after receiving a sharp pass from Youri Tielemans and placing his effort through the middle of the goal.
- Benjamin Sesko scored on the edge of half-time to leave Sabah facing an impossible recovery.
- Lisandro Martinez completed the scoring in the 68th minute, driving a left-footed finish into the bottom-right corner after a rehearsed set-piece move.
Sabah, the Azerbaijani visitors, were unable to establish a foothold as United continued to press after the interval. The home defence held firm while the attack repeatedly created openings.
