Musiala Scores as Bayern Munich Thrash Bodo/Glimt 5-0 in Champions League Opener
Bayern Munich opened their Champions League campaign with a 5-0 win over FK Bodo/Glimt at the Allianz Arena, with Jamal Musiala marking his first start of the season by scoring the breakthrough goal.
Musiala returns with decisive opener
The 23-year-old Germany international was restored to Vincent Kompany’s XI after making a short substitute appearance against Schalke at the weekend. It was his first start since pre-season health incidents, when he collapsed during friendlies against RB Leipzig and Heidenheim following neurological dysfunctions.
- Musiala put Bayern ahead in the 47th minute.
- Harry Kane struck from range and Patrick Berg’s deflection sent the ball into Musiala’s path.
- The midfielder turned sharply before firing into the far corner.
- Kompany said Musiala had earned the opportunity: “He deserved to start. It wasn’t a gift.”
Kane milestone sparks Bayern surge
Bodo/Glimt had kept Bayern scoreless through a difficult opening half, but the hosts took control after Musiala’s goal. Kane headed in Bayern’s second from Michael Olise’s accurate free-kick on 61 minutes.
- Kane’s header was his 55th Champions League goal.
- It also moved the England captain to 79 goals in European competition overall.
- Alphonso Davies extended the lead to 3-0 in the 77th minute after a typically rapid break forward.
- Olise then scored twice, striking in the 83rd minute and again in stoppage time.
Bodo/Glimt resistance ends after first-half stand
The Norwegian visitors arrived in Munich after notable wins over Manchester City, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan in the previous campaign, and they frustrated Bayern for much of the first 45 minutes with a deep defensive shape.
Joshua Kimmich hit the post in the 35th minute, then saw another effort stopped by goalkeeper Nikita Haikin shortly before half-time. Bayern eventually found the space they needed after the break and ran away with the contest.
What happens next
The victory means Bayern have now won the first match of their European campaign in 23 straight seasons. Their last opening-night defeat came in 2002/03, when Deportivo La Coruna beat them 3-2.
Bayern’s next continental fixture is away to Viking Stavanger in Norway on October 13.
