Newcastle United confirm redesigned crest after fan vote
Newcastle United have confirmed a redesigned club crest after more than 27,000 supporters voted at the end of a two-year consultation and design process.
The updated badge retains the key features of the existing identity: the castle, the black-and-white striped shield and the two hippocampi, which reflect Newcastle’s shipbuilding history. The club will switch its digital channels to the new crest immediately.
Who is affected
- Newcastle’s players will wear the new emblem in a competitive match for the first time when Crystal Palace visit St James’ Park for the club’s final home game of the season.
- The crest will become a permanent feature of Newcastle’s playing kits from the 2027-28 campaign.
- Supporters had the decisive vote after the club sought their views on how far the historic badge should change.
Chief executive David Hopkinson said fans had made their position clear from the beginning: preserve the elements that matter and avoid a complete restart. He said the final design stayed within those limits and remained rooted in the city’s coat of arms.
Kenneth McIver, Newcastle’s chief creative officer and a lifelong supporter, led the redesign. The former Nike designer said the assignment carried exceptional personal pressure, including scrutiny from supporters, family and friends, and insisted every detail had been repeatedly tested rather than altered for the sake of it.
What happens next
- Newcastle begin using the revised badge across digital platforms now.
- The crest receives its matchday shirt debut against Crystal Palace in the final St James’ Park fixture of the season.
- The new identity is installed permanently on first-team kits in 2027-28.
The off-pitch rebrand arrives alongside Newcastle’s target of becoming credible Premier League title contenders by 2030. Matthias Jaissle’s immediate task remains building enough consistency across competitions to turn that wider ambition into silverware.
