Olympiacos Pursue Icardi as Tottenham Weigh Free Agent Deal

Olympiacos have opened formal talks over a deal for free agent Mauro Icardi, while Tottenham are also considering the former Argentina striker as Roberto De Zerbi searches for an immediate answer to his side’s scoring collapse.

Icardi, 33, is without a club after bringing his four-year spell at Galatasaray to an end. Tottenham are assessing him as a short-term attacking option after drawing two and losing two of their first four Premier League matches, scoring no goals and conceding eight. That return has left Spurs 17th in the table on two points.

The North London club have invested heavily in the squad but have yet to see their new forward line click. Sandro Tonali arrived for £100 million, Mateus Fernandes cost £85 million and Savio joined for a further £85 million. Omar Marmoush also moved from Manchester City on loan, with a £60 million compulsory purchase clause included in the agreement.

Marmoush has started against Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and Liverpool, but has not registered a goal. He showed flashes in the 3-1 loss to Liverpool but could not change the outcome. Dominic Solanke has also drawn a blank in each of his first five Tottenham appearances.

Richarlison is no longer in the first-team picture following a serious breakdown in relations with the club. The Brazil forward has not played since the opening-day 3-0 defeat at Brentford, further reducing De Zerbi’s options up front.

Icardi wages could block move

Olympiacos are attempting to complete a deal, but no agreement has been reached. Icardi’s salary demands are the main obstacle, with the striker believed to earn about £8.6 million a year.

The experienced forward would bring a proven record to whichever club meets his terms. He won two Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain and collected four Turkish league crowns during his productive Galatasaray stay.

Tottenham’s only convincing result so far came in the Carabao Cup, where they beat Charlton Athletic 5-1. Their subsequent Liverpool exit, however, underlined the scale of De Zerbi’s task. The next decision is whether Spurs pursue Icardi despite his wages, or persist with a costly attack that has yet to score in league football.
