The dispute began online after Carragher attacked Morgan and Rio Ferdinand for repeatedly defending Ronaldo following the Portugal forward’s controversial conduct for his national side.

Morgan returned to the subject alongside Simon Jordan, arguing that Carragher’s stance may have been shaped by Ronaldo’s refusal to acknowledge him during a previous Sky Sports encounter.

“Jamie Carragher and I had a little spat at the weekend,” Morgan said. “He claimed Rio Ferdinand and I were embarrassing ourselves by defending Cristiano Ronaldo because we are friends with him.”

Morgan then pointed to the Sky incident, saying Ronaldo had effectively “pied” Carragher by declining to recognise him, and suggested that episode explained the pundit’s reaction.

The pair had already exchanged blows on social media. Morgan accused Carragher of applying different standards, referring to his support for Luis Suarez during the racial-abuse controversy and revisiting Carragher’s own spitting incident.

Carragher responded by branding Morgan a sycophant obsessed with securing another Ronaldo interview. He also posted an older Morgan newspaper column in which Ronaldo had been described as a “spoilt brat”, challenging the broadcaster’s current defence of the Portuguese star.

There has been no sign of either man stepping back, with a further Carragher response to Morgan’s latest television comments now the next development to watch.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, has continued scoring for Al Nassr. His strike against Neftchi Fargona in the AFC Champions League Elite took his career total to 981 goals.
