Rafael Marquez Named Mexico Head Coach for 2030 World Cup Cycle
Rafael Marquez has been confirmed as Mexico’s new senior head coach, with the 47-year-old appointed to lead El Tri through the 2030 World Cup cycle.
Marquez takes charge after working as Javier Aguirre’s assistant from August 2024 until Mexico’s round-of-16 elimination this summer. The former Barcelona defender now returns to the national-team spotlight with a chance to achieve as a coach what he could not reach during five World Cups as a player: progress beyond the quarter-finals.
Marquez targets a different World Cup outcome
The former centre-back said he sees the role as a fresh opportunity to make an impact on football’s biggest stage.
“I have another chance,” Marquez said. “It did not happen for me as a player in five World Cups. We arrive at the same spot and now I have the opportunity, first to reach the World Cup and hopefully achieve something different.”
He added that the demands of leading Mexico exceed anything he experienced in his playing days, while insisting he wants to pass on his experience from the touchline.
“I had an extraordinary career as a player, but this is a greater responsibility and another chapter,” he said. “I want to be on the pitch transmitting everything I can. I hope to be as successful as I was as a player.”
Marquez also accepted that difficult periods will come during his tenure, but said he is confident the squad can overcome them. “I will give everything,” he said, “and hopefully things go well.”
Experienced staff joins new Mexico boss
Mexico’s new manager will not begin with an unfamiliar group. Having worked within Aguirre’s set-up, Marquez already knows the players and the national-team environment.
Andres Guardado, his former international colleague and a veteran of four World Cups, joins the staff alongside assistants Juan Manuel Lillo and Vidal Paloma. Goalkeeping coach Xabier Mancisidor and fitness coach Pol Lorente are also part of the coaching group.
Marquez said the continuity from his previous role gives him confidence, with experienced staff around him to help push the team forward.
- Marquez served as Aguirre’s assistant from August 2024 until Mexico’s round-of-16 exit this summer.
- The Mexican Football Federation named him head coach on Thursday, placing him in charge until the 2030 World Cup.
- His first match as Mexico boss will come against Colombia at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on September 26.
- El Tri then face Peru on September 29, the United States on October 3 and Chile on October 6 during a four-game United States friendly schedule.
The September and October fixtures give Marquez an immediate chance to assess his options, test tactical ideas and build depth before Mexico’s road toward 2030 moves into its competitive phase.
