Chelsea co-owner Mark Walter is moving closer to selling his minority stake to Clearlake Capital, with the proposed internal deal set to value his share above his original investment. Walter’s representative said the transaction has been developing for some time and stressed that the 66-year-old did not begin the process himself.

Clearlake, led by Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano, owns 61.5 per cent of Chelsea. The other 38.5 per cent is held equally by Walter, chairman Todd Boehly and Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss. If Clearlake completes purchases of Boehly and Walter’s holdings, the firm would take near-complete control of the west London club.

“This potential transaction values Mark Walter’s stake in Chelsea Football Club at a premium to his initial investment and is another successful sports investment for him,” Walter’s spokesperson said. “After this exit, Mr. Walter intends to make future sports-related investments.”

The spokesperson added that Walter had not initiated the proposed sale, which has been under discussion for an extended period. It remains uncertain whether Wyss will also choose to sell his stake.

Clearlake set for greater Chelsea control

BlueCo bought Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in May 2022 in a £2.5 billion deal, alongside a commitment for a further £1.75bn of investment. Boehly became the public face of the takeover and took the chairman’s role, but Eghbali has increasingly been the prominent figure around the club, meeting sporting directors and travelling to both home and away matches.

Tensions between the ownership partners have been reported for two years, particularly over football strategy and the prospect of redeveloping Stamford Bridge. Earlier discussions over a buyout had slowed amid disagreement on valuation.

A governance arrangement had already been expected to remove Boehly as chairman next May, with a Clearlake appointee due to take over. A completed sale would instead end Boehly’s Chelsea involvement entirely.

Walter’s likely departure also follows his recent agreement to sell his interest in the Los Angeles Lakers, although his representative said he intends to pursue further investments in sport.

On the field, head coach Xabi Alonso will look to keep attention on results. Chelsea are fourth in the Premier League after winning two of their first three matches, while their new-look forward line struck six in a 6-3 Carabao Cup win over Leeds.

The Blues next play newly promoted Hull City. Alonso’s reshaped squad, rebuilt with £349 million of summer spending, now faces the challenge of maintaining momentum while major changes loom in the boardroom.
