Real Madrid have made Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah a leading target for next summer, with the Spanish club closely monitoring the 23-year-old’s Bundesliga form as they plan a defensive rebuild.

Leverkusen move €35m Club-record fee paid to Liverpool
Liverpool buy-back €70m Option available until June 15, 2027
Arsenal offer €65m Bid rejected by Leverkusen last August

Madrid are expected to bring in at least two defenders at the end of the campaign, and Quansah’s ability to play at centre-back or right-back has pushed him high on their list. His pace, front-foot defending and composure in possession match the profile the club want.

The England international has also strengthened his case during the latest international window. He started at right-back ahead of Madrid’s Trent Alexander-Arnold in England’s 3-2 loss to Spain under Thomas Tuchel.

Quansah joined Leverkusen from Liverpool for a record €35m after helping England win the 2025 European Under-21 Championship. He has quickly become a major figure in Germany, handling both central defensive duties and the demands of a more attacking full-back role.

Madrid could have an additional personal link in their favour. Quansah and Jude Bellingham are close from their time in the England set-up, although any move remains complicated by Liverpool’s contractual protection.

Liverpool can re-sign their academy product for €70m if they activate the buy-back clause before June 15, 2027. The clause gives the Premier League club a decisive route back into the race should they decide his development warrants a return to Anfield.

Chelsea have already made enquiries about Quansah, with former Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso said to be interested in taking him to Stamford Bridge. Arsenal also tested Leverkusen’s resolve last August with a €65m proposal, but the German club turned it down.

What happens next: Leverkusen remain in a strong position with Quansah tied down until 2030. Madrid’s scouting will continue, while Liverpool’s buy-back deadline and growing interest from Chelsea and Arsenal ensure his future will remain under close watch.
