Reece James and Emiliano Martinez urged to lead Chelsea’s defensive revival

Chelsea will resume their campaign at home to Bournemouth on October 10, with Reece James and Emiliano Martínez under fresh pressure to provide the authority Xabi Alonso’s side have lacked at the back.

Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf believes captain James must become more demanding inside the dressing room and on the pitch, arguing that his standing at the club gives him every right to challenge team-mates.

Leboeuf praised James’s bond with Chelsea, comparing his connection to the club with that of John Terry, but said the England international cannot remain too accommodating when standards slip.

“He has to stop being so nice,” Leboeuf said. “As a top international player, he should speak when he is unhappy with his team-mates.”

He pointed to former team-mates Dennis Wise and Didier Deschamps as examples of players unafraid to confront colleagues. Leboeuf also recalled criticising Gianfranco Zola during his Chelsea career, with the Italian accepting it because it was intended to help the team.

James, in Leboeuf’s view, should be prepared to demand more defensive work from Cole Palmer, urge the playmaker to keep his game simple when required, and challenge Wesley Fofana to remain switched on.

Martínez has also been urged to find his voice quickly following his move to west London. The World Cup-winning Argentina goalkeeper is still settling into his new surroundings, but Leboeuf believes the adaptation period must now end.

The former defender highlighted the Brentford set-piece in which Anthony found space at a corner. He wants Alonso to establish whether Danny Welbeck or Fofana was responsible, while Martínez should make his frustration clear to the players in front of him.

Alonso has persisted with a back three, but Chelsea’s early defensive record has undermined expectations around a squad viewed as Premier League title challengers before the season began. The departure of Fernández to Manchester City has also raised questions over the remaining leadership group.

There is little doubt over Chelsea’s attacking options. Morgan Rogers has joined Palmer in the creative roles behind João Pedro, giving Alonso considerable firepower for 2026-27. Preventing goals, rather than scoring them, has become the immediate issue.

The international break gives Alonso time to adjust his defensive plan before Bournemouth arrive. James and Martínez are expected to be involved, and Chelsea need their senior figures to set the tone with both their performances and their words.
