Rio Ngumoha has been omitted from England’s 23-man matchday squad for tonight’s Nations League opener against Spain at Wembley.
The Liverpool forward, 18, was included in Thomas Tuchel’s senior group this month but is the one player to miss the final team sheet after England reported to camp with 24 available players. UEFA permits only 23 players in a matchday squad.
How Ngumoha reached the senior set-up

Spain test comes without the teenager
England face the reigning world and European champions seeking a response to their Euro 2024 final loss to Luis de la Fuente’s side. Ngumoha will not be involved on the pitch in front of a full Wembley crowd, but his absence is an administrative selection issue rather than a judgement on his work in camp.
The decision delays a possible competitive home debut, not his place in Tuchel’s plans. England will play Czechia twice and Croatia once during the coming weeks, with those fixtures offering further opportunities for the teenager.
Tuchel is expected to manage the workload of established players across the international window, potentially creating space for Ngumoha to enter the matchday rotation later in the camp.
